October 2nd, 2012 by Vicki No comments »

Playing catch-up on your favourite TV shows? Check out this week’s releases:

Season 7 of How I Met Your Mother is a season of growth, as Barney embarks on a serious relationship, Marshall and Lily welcome their first child into the world, and Ted grows ever-closer (or does he?) to meeting his future wife.

Hey, girl! Zooey Deschanel’s New Girl was the hottest new series of last season, following a quirky teacher as she moves on from a long-term relationship… and moves in with three male roommates.

Rachel Bilson takes a step away from Orange County and enters Bluebell, Alabama in the first season of Hart of Dixie. She plays surgeon Zoe Hart who accepts a position at a tiny medical practice in the small town.

What’s on TV: How I Met Your Mother cleans house

September 28th, 2010 by Vicki No comments »

After last week’s stellar season premiere, How I Met Your Mother deviated off the mother path for a mostly Barney-centric episode. And, rather than focusing on one of Barney’s sexploits, the episode decided to delve into Barney’s softer side.

Barney’s mother needs help packing up her home, so Barney enlists in his friends’ help in the task. As Barney (along with his brother James) look through old documents, they stumble upon an envelope addressed to a Sam Gibbs. In it a photo of young James and Barney, with the words “Your son” written in the back.

Barney’s mother spews some lie about how the photo was taken in a city called Yourson, and we see how deep Barney believes the lies fed to him by his mom. We all already know about the Bob Barker lie–in which Barney believed for most of his life that the former Price is Right host was his real dad–but his whole life was a series of them. James is intent on meeting Sam Gibbs, to see if the man is either his dad or Barney’s.

They make the trek… and it’s an older African-American gentleman who opens the door. James is floored to meet his dad and, er, so his Barney. Barney tries to butt into James’ father-son bonding, and everyone lets Barney believe his delusion. (In one hilarious bit, Barney joins in with James and Sam as they tenderly sing along to “Stand by Me” on the piano.”)

Barney eventually has a sit-down with his mother, who admits all the lies she told him since his youth were to protect him. And Barney realizes this, from the lie that he was removed from the basketball time because he was just too good (it was the opposite actually) to the one about the Postmaster General taking the blame for not delivering his birthday party invites to his classmates. So when Mrs. Stinson offers Barney the name of his real dad, he refuses it: his mom is father enough for him. Cue the awwwws.

For the caricature Barney can be at times, it’s always nice to see the more human side of him. What did you all think? Stellar episode? Or was it too much of the Barnicle for your liking? Discuss!

How I Met Your Mother Season Premiere Recap

September 21st, 2010 by Vicki No comments »

Well, we’re back from summer hiatus and that means getting reacquainted with our fave New York City buddies.

Where we left off: Robin ended her first “real” relationship with Don, Marshall and Lily were ready to make a baby and Ted, well, was nowhere near meeting his future wife.

Cue season six where we start off with a wedding. And Ted in a tux. Hmm. Well, it’s not what you think…

Present-day Ted spots a hot woman at the bar and, after fighting over her with Barney, wants to make his move. Until he spots Cindy with her, the girl he went out with last season and who is the roommate of the titular “mother”. Ted avoids Cindy over the way things ended (i.e. bad) but is surprised when Cindy wants to talk to him and actually thanks him, because him dumping her turned out to be a good thing.

Why? Well, blonde girl at the bar wasn’t Ted’s future wife. Turns out she’s Cindy’s future life partner. Turn’s out Cindy’s breakup with Ted  made her reevaluate her life. So Cindy found “the one”, and Ted… not quite yet.

The second storyline of the episode involved Marshall and Lily and their baby-making plans. They’ve got the ambiance and the music, but they’ve also got… a new bassinet? From Marshall’s dad. Lily is livid at the fact that Marshall overshares with his father, and sharing the fact that they’re trying to conceive (cue huge “Good Luck, Marshall!” banner at the law office). They’re too-real fight is resolved when Lily admits she doesn’t want to tell too many people lest their attempts don’t prove fruitful. Meaning, she’s afraid to disappoint him. They apologize and make-up and project baby resumes.

As for Robin and Barney? No plots for them quite yet, save for Robin’s slob chic look since her breakup, which I am sure will be rectified come next week.

Oh, and that wedding? Ted was just a nervous best man. And he’ll be meeting his future wife that very day. Stay tuned.

So, whaddya think? Will Marshall and Lily successfully conceive? We’re you duped into thinking blonde girl at the bar was the “mother”? Whose wedding are they at? Share your thoughts below!
