10 organizations for your clothing donations



 

With Spring arriving, we’re all for a big wardrobe cleaning session. But what to do with the stack of clothes and accessories that come out of this spring cleaning? You can always swap with your friends, but you could also think about helping the people in need. Many organizations across Canada will gladly accept clothing donations to help their communities or people who can’t afford theirs.

Here is a list of organizations for clothing donations that we have grouped for you:

Value Village (All over Canada)

Purpose of the organization: Value Village is a for-profit, global thrift retailer offering great quality, gently used clothing, accessories and household goods. Our business model of purchasing, reselling and recycling gives communities a smart way to shop and keeps more than 700 million pounds of used goods from landfills each year. We also help more than 120 nonprofit organizations by paying them for donated goods, which supports their vital community programs and services

What you do with your donations: Sold in Value Village’s store, the profit goes to nonprofit organization.

Picking mode: In store or picking at home on request with one of their partner organization.

Le Chaînon (Montreal)

Purpose of the organization: Help women in need by providing support and shelter.

What you do with your donations: Sold in their store to help finance the organization.

Picking mode: At the store.

Certex (Montreal)

Purpose of the organization: Providing permanent employment to people with disabilities through the operation of a specialized centre for the recovery for reuse of clothing, shoes and small used articles.

What you do with your donations: Sold in thrift stores or their store otherwise they find another use to your clothes like industrial wipers  to clean.

Picking mode: Donations bins

Goodwill (Ontario)

Purpose of the organization: Changing lives and communities through the power of work.

What you do with your donations: Sold in stores to help them create jobs and help the community.

Picking mode: In stores or to a drop-off location.

Le Support (Montreal)

Purpose of the organization: The mission of the Foundation is to raise funds to support organizations working to integrate and improve the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities.

What you do with your donations: Sold to fund the Foundation and support other organizations to help the cause of intellectual disability.

Picking mode: Donation bins or picking at home on demand.

Diabetes Canada ( Canada not including Quebec)

Purpose of the organization: Support and subsidize the activities of Diabetes Canada. Diabetes Canada aims to defend the rights, educate, inform and provide services to people with diabetes and their loved ones. Diabetes Canada also promotes the training of health professionals and the public awareness of diabetes. Diabetes Canada subsidizes research.

What you do with your donations: Sold to provide money to help the foundation.

Picking mode: Drop box.

Renaissance (Montreal)

Purpose of the organization: Help people without jobs.

What you do with your donations: They are sold in stores; profits are used to integrate the unemployed into the labor market.

Picking mode: Donation bins or picking at home on demand.

Comptoir Emmaus  ( Quebec)

Purpose of the organization: Help people in need.

What you do with your donations: Surpluses are entirely donated to charitable organizations either in the Quebec region or internationally. They prioritize various charities including St. Vincent de Paul, Auberivière, Bouchée Généreuse … Since October 2003, the Comptoir ships containers full of clothes, suitcases, furniture, dishes, shoes, toys and more for Caritas del Peru, located in Lima, Peru.

Picking mode: Drop them at the counter of the organization.

Salvation Army (All over Canada)

Purpose of the organization: Help families in need.

What you do with your donations: They are given to families in need or sold in the stores of the organization to finance its activities and support the poor families or shipped abroad.

Picking mode: Drop them at the counter of the organization or in their store.

Saint-Vincent-de-Paul society (Quebec and Montreal)

Purpose of the organization: Help people in need.

What you do with your donations: They are either given to the poor, or sold so the profits are used to help those in need.

Picking mode: Drop in the many service centers of the Society.
