SUP yoga: it’s the latest fitness trend to hit Canada. Just say the word “SUP” and you’ll get why this new form of yoga is catching on. It’s definitely making a splash (literally!) with the yoga community; dive in to find out why.

An introduction
SUP yoga first came to Canada in 2010 and is now being taught in several surf schools, resorts, and yoga schools from coast to coast. SUP yoga—a.k.a. stand-up paddleboard yoga—is practiced on a surfboard with a paddle. That’s right, yogis are now striking cobra and warrior poses in the middle of the lake!
While yoga is known for building flexibility and muscle tone, SUPing requires even more stability. Get ready to give your core muscles and abs a workout: one session, and you’ll discover muscles you didn’t even know you had! If you like the idea of practicing yoga in the great outdoors, SUP yoga will be right up your alley.

Where to begin
Before you hit the water, start with an introductory class on the ground and get to know your board. When you’re ready to venture into the water, you’ll find that paddling will work your core and abdominal muscles, and trying not to tip over just adds to the challenge. Will you get wet? Probably, but it’s all part of the learning process!
Of course, you can’t move around as much or as quickly as you would in the studio. With SUP yoga, water is your biggest obstacle, as well as ally. Mastering the movements, reacting to waves, and adapting to your new platform are the biggest feats. And if you usually enjoy the technical side of yoga, don’t expect to be as challenged with SUP. That said, being able to breathe well and stay relaxed will help with stability and, let’s face it, your ego.
