An Interview With Gwen Stefani’s Hair Stylist

My meeting with hair artist Danilo

He’s worked for Gwen Stefani, Penelope Cruz, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and more. He was on seasons 3 and 4 of America’s Next Top Model. He’s also Pantene’s Celebrity Stylist and Global Ambassador, and I was lucky enough to have the chance to sit in his salon chair. I rarely trust hairdressers – what can I say, I’m selective about my style, and I have a hard time embracing change. Well, without even a word, Danilo completely understood. He revived my parched mane, and creating beautiful, natural curls that were completely revived without even washing my hair. “I saw your style when you arrived; simple and natural, why would I want to change it? That’s what we like to hear when at the hairdressers!”

How did you begin your collaboration with Pantene?

I was at a shoot for a Thierry Mugler campaign in the desert, and suddenly my tube of cream was empty. I went to a pharmacy and got a hold of a moisturizing leave-in by Pantene, which I immediately adopted. Later, in an interview with a beauty editor, she asked me what was in my bag and I mentioned the product in question. It reached the ears of the brand, and they invited me to meet them and join their team. Its now been more than 15 years.

How do the hair habits of women differ around the world?

There’s actually a general trend that we notice everywhere. Previously, women used too much conditioner. Today, they use too much shampoo and not enough conditioner. From a style point of view, Americans prefer strong hair colours, whereas the French always have their hair a little sloppy, very natural looking, even at a gala. Europeans have a certain je-ne-sais-quoi that’s very relaxed, very free.

What’s your favourite trend right now?

Healthy hair. That’s what women want more than anything, and it’s great as a trend. I also love ombré, I love the idea that we can choose where to apply colour on the hair. And, finally, curls are totally in!

What country inspires you the most?

I’m very intrigued by Asia. Otherwise, I love being in New York where the street style is very artistic, sometimes even with very few means.

What do you like most about your job?

I love the diversity of my job. I love being on movie sets, at fashion shows, filming videos, magazine shoots. I feel that I give and receive a lot in return. It’s a beautiful mix.

On my hair, Danilo used the leave-in moisturizer Velvet Cream Infusion from the new Dry Defy line. He applied it on my dry hair, and then blow dried it before using a curling iron. He also used a dry shampoo on my roots and my ends to boost the volume of my hair.
