DIY Hair Care Recipes

HAIR_HAIR_INTERNALWe fashionistas take our beauty routines seriously, and often end up spending a good portion of our paycheque on skin and hair care products. Luckily, there are DIY beauty treatments you can try at home—including some to help you keep your locks gorgeous and healthy. We’ve got three simple ones to whip up with regular household ingredients. Check them out!

Banana Repair Mask
Bananas are full of potassium and vitamins, which are great conditioning elements. Try this mask to help restore shine and softness to your mane.

What you’ll need:
½ banana
1 tbsp honey
1 tsp olive oil
A few mint leaves

Instructions: Purée the banana and mint leaves in a blender. Put contents in a bowl and mix in the honey and olive oil, making sure everything is combined smoothly. Apply to damp hair. Leave on for at least 20 minutes before rinsing.

Chamomile Shine Shampoo
Chamomile adds shine to hair and soothes the scalp. This shampoo will also bring out golden highlights on blond hair.

What you’ll need:
4 bags of chamomile tea
½ cup boiling water
½ cup baby shampoo or grated soap bar

Infuse tea bags in boiling water (let sit for about 30 minutes) in a small bowl. Mix in baby shampoo or grated soap flakes, letting the soap soften and melt. Try to make the mixture as smooth as possible. Apply to wet hair, lather, and rinse.

Lemon Hair Spray
Lemon adds body to finer hair, as well as enhances shine and smells great! Use this recipe as a hair spray (in a bottle) or work it into hair and use as a simple rinse.

Note: Do not use before going out in the sun unless you wish to add highlights to your strands (works especially well on blondes).

What you’ll need:
3 lemons
Spray bottle

Slice lemons and place them in a pot, covered with water. After bringing water to a boil, let simmer for an hour. After the water has cooled, remove lemons from the water using a strainer. Squeeze out any leftover lemon juice from the pieces into the water. Pour the mix into a spray bottle, and spritz onto hair.
