How to Apply Self-Tanners like a Pro

Although it’s pretty luxurious to lounge by the pool for hours and hours, it’s important to remember the dangers of staying out in the sun for long periods of time. The next best thing is sunless tanners. There’s a wide variety of self-tanners on the market with different applications but the prepping is all the same. Here’s a couple of tips and tricks to make sure that your fake tan looks as real as possible and some amazing self-tanners that are easy to use!

1. Exfoliate, exfoliate, and exfoliate

Yes, before you apply your tan, exfoliate like your life depends on it. You want to get rid of all the dead skin so that you have a smooth surface to work with. Exfoliate the dryer areas of the skin like elbows and knees. Also, make note that if you are going to shave or wax, it’s best to wait 24 hours before self-tanning.

2. Moisturize before applying

Before you apply your fake tan, use a moisturizer on your entire body and pay extra attention to those dry areas like hands, feet, elbows, and knees. Make sure you moisturize along your hairline, especially if you have grey or blond hair. This will prevent your hair from turning brassy.

3.  Use a mitt for easier application

This is one trick I wish I knew before using any self-tanner. Tanned palms are always a dead giveaway but if you use a mitt, you eliminate that from ever happening and the entire process becomes way easier.

4. Use it up

Use the product and cover your skin liberally. The tanner doesn’t have to be even, it just has to cover the area. This won’t mean that your skin will be darker in certain areas, it just means that your tan will be more even.

5. Go easy on the face

It’s better to use a different tanner for your face. A gradual formula will be easier to build up and blend. Also, you don’t want to apply the self-tanner all over the face but rather the places you naturally tan such as your forehead, cheeks, nose bridge, and chin. Blend everything out like you would a bronzer.
