Iceberg Vodka: Oscar-Themed Cocktails

5 leading ladies, 5 inspired drinks
On Sunday February 22, the 87th Academy Awards will take place in Hollywood, honouring the best and the brightest of this past year in film. The Best Actress category in particular is going to be one tight race. Iceberg Vodka decided to pay homage to the following five leading ladies—Reese Witherspoon, Marion Cotillard, Julianne Moore, Rosamund Pike, and Felicity Jones—by creating five signature drinks. Be sure to whip these up at your Oscar-viewing party this weekend!
Reese Witherspoon: Southern Charm
This isn’t Witherspoon’s first time at the Oscars: she already took home a Best Actress statuette in 2005 for her turn in Walk the Line. This time, she’s nominated for her role in Wild, based on the Cheryl Strayed memoir, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. While her character has a bit more grit, Witherspoon herself remains a Southern belle (she was born in Louisiana) at heart.
2 oz. Iceberg Vodka
2 oz. apple cider
0.5 oz. simple syrup (equal parts sugar and boiled water)
Apple slice
Cinnamon powder
Cinnamon stick

Combine sugar and cinnamon powder in a separate dish. Dampen the edge of a chilled martini glass and rim with the sugar and cinnamon. Combine Iceberg Vodka, cider and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well, and strain into the martini glass. Garnish with an apple slice, a sprinkle of cinnamon and a cinnamon stick.

Marion Cotillard: The French Kiss
The Paris-born beauty first won over our hearts in 2007’s La Vie en Rose, playing the incomparable French singer, Edith Piaf. She took home the Best Actress award for the role, and is presently nominated for her role in Two Days, One Night. This concoction is an ode to Cotillard’s French flair and beauty.

2 oz. Iceberg Vodka
0.5 oz. Chambord
1 tbsp. simple syrup (equal parts boiled water and sugar)
2 tbsp. cranberry juice
7 raspberries
Lime wedge
Muddle four raspberries in a cocktail shaker, then add ice, Iceberg Vodka, Chambord, simple syrup and cranberry juice. Shake well and strain into a rocks glass with ice. Garnish with remaining raspberries and lime wedge.

Julianne Moore: The Seasoned Veteran
Flawless at 54, Moore is a five-time Academy Award nominee, more recently for her powerful role in Still Alice, playing a woman suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s. A seasoned cocktail for a seasoned veteran, this variation of the classic Caesar brings to mind the actress’ telltale red mane.

1 oz. Iceberg Vodka
1/2 c. spicy tomato-vegetable juice (i.e. V8)
2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
1 dash hot sauce
Salt and pepper (to taste)
1 stalk of celery
1 stalk of asparagus
Lemon wedge

Salt the rim of a short glass and fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add Iceberg Vodka, spicy tomato-vegetable juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, salt and pepper to your preference, and shake well. Strain into the glass and garnish with a celery stalk, asparagus stalk and wedge of lemon.

Rosamund Pike: English Rose
Even though her character in Gone Girl is a bit, er, rough around the edges, Pike is a prim British girl through and through. (Her parents are both opera singers, after all; how fitting is that?!) A first-time nominee—and certainly not last—this soft cocktail is a tribute to her English pedigree.

1.5 oz. Iceberg Vodka
3-4 oz. tonic water
1 oz. Rose’s Lime Cordial
Grapefruit zest
Rose petals
Pour Iceberg Vodka into a chilled wine glass with ice. Add Rose’s Lime Cordial and tonic water. Stir gently, then garnish with grapefruit zest. Add rose petals around the bottom of the glass, for presentation.
Felicity Jones: The Evergreen
Jones, the youngest among the Best Actress nominees, garnered her first Oscar nod for her role in The Theory of Everything, playing theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking’s first wife, Jane. A fresh face at the Academy Awards certainly deserves a fresh cocktail!

8 oz. Iceberg Vodka
1 English cucumber
1/2 c. fresh mint (loosely packed)
2 tsp. granulated sugar
2 tbsp. fresh lime juice
2 oz. orange liqueur
Soda water

Cut 4 thin spears of the cucumber for garnish. Peel the remainder and quarter lengthwise. Scrape out seeds with a spoon and discard. Coarsely chop cucumber, then puree in a food processor until smooth and strain. Muddle fresh mint for 10 seconds, then add sugar and lime juice to a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake well; add cucumber juice, Iceberg Vodka, and orange liqueur. Shake and strain into four glasses filled with ice, add soda water to fill glasses. Garnish with cucumber spears. (Makes four cocktails.)
