It was a tried and true staple for some during their university dormitory years—and it might still be what you get a craving for it every now and then. We’re revisiting this timeless comfort food and jazzing it up for your grown-up life. Here are some creative ways to give mac and cheese a fun twist.
1. Fiesta, fiesta!
Chopped pieces of fresh avocado, chorizo sausage, and diced tomatoes will turn boring mac and cheese into a Mexican delight. For those who like it spicy, add a few drops of Tabasco®.
2. Garden variety.
Add sautéed broccoli, carrots, onions, spinach, and bell peppers for a healthy and vegetarian twist. Frozen veggie mixes also work very well if fresh veggies are not on-hand.
3. Mambo Italiano.
4. Fried goodness.
Perhaps not the healthiest version, but for a night when you feel like indulging, give this a try—cut refrigerated pre-cooked mac and cheese into bite-size pieces, dredge each piece through flour, dip in egg wash and then coat with bread crumbs. Deep-fry in a pot of oil until golden brown, drain on paper towels and enjoy!
5. Western style.
Combine mac and cheese with diced ham, green and red pepper, cheddar, and a hard cooked egg for a breakfast version.
6. Harvest time.
Sautée apple slices and toasted walnut and mix in with your mac and cheese.
7. BBQ style.
9. Mac and cheese by the sea.
Use cooked pieces of lobster, crab or shrimp for a seafood twist. For a less expensive option, and also healthy, option, use canned tuna.
