One of the hardest things to do as a college or university student is managing your time. You have friends to hang out with, exams to study for, classes to attend, and a job to work. How are you supposed to get all this done? Here’s a few ways to manage your time so that you maximize your school experience and have a social life.

Plan Anything and Everything

Planning may seem like a boring task, but it’s key to having a stress-free and organized school year. You should take down every date when an assignment is due and use reminders, like post-it notes for exams and projects as deadlines approach. You don’t want to be that person who forgets about the midterm because you didn’t read the syllabus.

Create a Schedule

This doesn’t have to be a precise schedule of what you’re doing every minute of the day, but a rough sketch of what your week will typically look like. It’s a great way for figuring out when and how you’re going to do things.

Take Stuff With You

If you take the bus or subway to get to campus or to work, you have a bit of time to look over some notes. This is a great time to review notes, flashcards, or brainstorming ideas for your project. If you have time on your hands like you’re waiting in a doctor’s office, you can have a 15 minute study session.

Break Down Large Assignments

If you have a huge assignment start a few weeks earlier and break it down into smaller chunks. By spreading them out over the time you have to do the assignment you won’t be as overwhelmed if you started it a week before.

This can also be used for readings. 40-page article is quite intimidating, but if you break it into 8 page chunks over the course of a week, it’s not that bad.

Be Realistic and Prioritize

If you’re the type of person who needs an hour every night to do absolutely nothing, give yourself the time for it. It’ll make your life less complicated when you accept the fact that you will not function unless you have time to relax.

This also means saying no to shopping or playing video games with friends, when you have an assignment due soon. You’re here to get an education. Instead, try going to a nice cafe or library with them instead! You’ll at least get some work done, and you’ll also get to hang out and goof off with your friends.

Having trouble?

If you’re still having a bit of trouble talk to a counselor or an adviser. They’re here to help you and they want you to succeed. You have tons of resources available at your university so definitely reach out to them.
