Since we recently shared our delivery essentials for mommy, here’s what baby will need for his first stay at the hospital. But what about daddy? We want to involve men in the delivery process, but you rarely read about them. Of course, his list of must-haves won’t be quite as long, but we’ll still suggest some items for him further down.
Baby’s bag, just like mommy’s, should only contain the essentials. You don’t need dozens of gadgets, since you’ll be back in the comfort of your home soon enough. And if ever your stay ends up being longer than you thought, you can ask a friend or family member to fetch you a few more things from home.
Some hospitals provide them, but if you want to make sure to keep baby’s head warm, choose one or two ahead of time and take them with you. Carter’s 3-Pack Beanies, $10 in stores and online.
2. Pyjamas and onesies:
You’ll need several, since baby is bound to get dirty several times a day. Five of each should be enough for a two-day stay. Old Navy Baby Bodysuit, $9.94 in stores and online.
3. Travel outfit:
Baby will need an outfit for when you leave the hospital. You can put her into a pyjama, but if you’re giving birth during winter, plan appropriate clothing. H&M Jersey Set, $14.99 in stores.
4. Newborn car seat:
For the ride home, you’ll need to have a car seat with you. If you’re travelling with a friend or family member or taking a cab, take it with you when you head to the hospital. If not, install it in your car one week before your due date: that way, you’ll be ready no matter when you go into labour! Evenflo Triumph LX 3-in-1 Deluxe Convertible Car Seat, $199.99 at bestbuy.ca.
5. Indoor mittens:
To make sure your newborn doesn’t scratch her face with her little nails, you can slip her hands into some indoor mittens. You can also wrap her in a blanket. She’ll be well protected either way. Carter’s 3-Pack Mittens, $8 in stores and online.
6. Diaper ointment:
Baby’s skin could easily get irritated in his first days. Take a diaper cream with you that has been specially formulated for him: you’ll save him from a lot of discomfort. Live Clean Baby Soothing Relief Diaper Ointment, $5.96 at Walmart and online.
7. Bottles and formula:
Baby will be hungry as soon as he comes into the world, so it’s important to bring the essentials if you don’t plan to breastfeed. NUK Bottles 3 Pack, $18.99 at Babies “R” Us and online.
Plan 10 to 12 diapers per day for the first few days. Once again, some hospitals provide them to new families, but take some along, just in case yours doesn’t! Huggies Little Snugglers New born Diapers, $29.97 for 88 diapers at Walmart and online.
And as for your partner, keep things simple: a change of clothes for two or three days, basic shower and hygiene products (which you can share), and some change. Why? He’ll probably want to drink a tonne of coffee to make sure he stays awake and focused!
