Oscars 2015: We’re Talking Men’s Beauty Trends!

5 pressing questions answered by a men’s grooming expert
We’ve already shared with you a few of our favourite gowns from this past Sunday’s Oscar awards, as well as gushed about spring hair and makeup. But what about the gents: how can they take care of their appearance? We asked a few questions to Lauren Kaye Cohen, a men’s beauty expert who personally styled Ethan Hawke’s mane and facial hair for the big event, to learn more about men’s grooming.

What is, according to you, the most widespread beauty concern among men?
“Many men seem to be concerned with shaving irritation, razor burn, ingrown hairs and all things shave-related. It’s so important to have the right tools!”

What is an essential rule to creating a naturally-groomed look on a man?
“Please, do not over-groom! (That being said, please do not under-groom, either.) For example, I love a smooth clean-shaven face but with slightly undone hair. And it is a must to clean up eyebrows, but not to fully sculpt them.”

What is the hottest male trend in regards to beauty and grooming this season?
“Men are taking better care of themselves and feel more comfortable [simply by] buying—and using—grooming products. It’s so attractive to see a man who takes care of himself.”

How, exactly, did you groom Ethan Hawke for the Oscars this year?
“We discussed exactly the look we were going for in advance, deciding to keep a modern feel, yet still give a nod to classic Hollywood styling. Ethan started by shaving with the Gillette Fusion ProGlide razor with Flexball Technology ($19.99) for his face and neck, then trimming his goatee with the Gillette ProGlide Styler ($25.99). I applied La Mer The Oil Absorbing Lotion ($245) to hydrate his face and neck, yet keep the skin slightly matte, and La Mer The Eye Balm Intense ($190) to help soften fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. For his hair, I combed a strong side part and smoothed the sides downward with Oribe Rough Luxury Soft Molding Paste ($36) and kept the top modern and textured with Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($42).”

Which client of yours has made an impression on you?
“For many years, I’ve been lucky enough to work with Pittsburgh Steelers’ strong safety and 8-time NFL Pro-Bowler, Troy Polamalu. As a professional athlete, he takes great care of himself… and his skin shows it. He is incredibly disciplined and inspires me to live a healthier life.”
