    Setting Up a Home Office

    By Martha Li

If you run your own business or you telecommute often, it’s important to have a place in your home where you can work at an optimal level. Follow these steps to setting up a home office that’s practical, comfortable and geared for working success!

    1. Identify a suitable space for your home office. Although a separate room is preferable, this may not be possible for everyone. Even if it’s just a small corner, the important thing is to designate a specific area in your home as workspace. Limit non work-related distractions by choosing a space away from high-traffic areas of your home. Also make sure there is natural light (a window would be ideal) and good air circulation.

    2. Buy office furniture that is comfortable, functional, and affordable. Get a desk that’s large enough to place your computer, a phone and other equipment but also leaves room for you to write. Look for an ergonomically-designed chair that provides the correct back and arm support. If your office space is limited, it will be useful to find a desk with ample drawer or shelving space. For additional space, also consider installing shelves behind, or above, your desk so that supplies and files are easily within reach.

    3. Ensure proper lighting in your home office. Reduce eye strain by using a mix of overhead lighting as well as a desk lamp. Installing light dimmers will also help to avoid getting a glare off the computer.

    4. Purchase office equipment. Make a list of office equipment essentials such as a computer, printer, fax machine, and phone (look for one with a hold button). Once you’ve bought all your equipment, hire a professional to set up the Internet, phone and fax lines to ensure everything is in working order and properly plugged in. Be sure to get a business phone line that’s separate from your home line.

    5. Stock up on the necessary office supplies. Printing paper, pens, paper clips, sticky notes, a stapler—these are all items you’ll probably use on a regular basis. Budget appropriately and only get what’s necessary (no, you definitely do not need highlighters in ten different colours!). Also invest in a simple filing system, such as clear plastic storage boxes, to help keep important documents organized.

    6. Personalize your home office with fun touches. Just like you would in an office cubicle, adding personal and fun touches will instantly take your home office from drab to fab. Hang artwork up on the wall or place fresh flowers in a vase on your desk—just don’t get too carried away. Remember, this is first and foremost your place of business. Now get crackin’!
