    What’s Your Networking Style?
    By Martha Li
    Published November 11, 2009

Networking is a beneficial and practical way to develop new contacts in your line of profession and stay in-the-know with what’s happening in your industry. How good are you at it? Take our quiz to find out your networking style!

    1. How many professional networking events do you attend each month?
    None.
    One or two.
    At least three.

    2. You’ve been invited to a networking event, and you’re attending alone. What’s the first thing you do when you arrive?
Look out for someone that you know, and if you’re unsuccessful, you head straight to the bar and hang around there for the remainder of the event.
This would never happen because you never attend functions by yourself. If you’re not able to get someone to attend with you, then you don’t go.
Introduce yourself to the organizers and make conversation with as many people as you possibly can.

    3. What do you usually do to prepare for a networking function?
Think of some things that are happening in your industry so you can talk knowledgeably about these issues if they come up in conversation.
Read up on current events, world affairs, and emerging business trends so you’re able to carry a conversation on a variety of topics.
Nothing, you figure you’ll just wing it once you start talking to someone.

    4. Do you always make sure to carry business cards with you?
Yes, you have a trusty business card holder that’s filled up with cards at all times.
Yes, but only if you know you’re going to a business function.
No, there have been instances where you have forgotten them at the office.
