Go ''Green'' for your Health

These days, everyone has the environment on their minds, and people are becoming ever-more conscious of the importance of making eco-friendly choices in all spheres of their lives. But going “green” isn’t just good for the planet; it’s good for your health, too! Check out four reasons why.

1. You’ll get moving.
Hopping on your bicycle or taking a stroll down the street to the supermarket is so much better for the environment and for your health than taking the car. Travelling by bus? Chances are you’ll have more walking to do to get to and from the bus stop than if you were driving. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, a total of 60 minutes of light physical activity or 30 to 60 minutes of moderate exercise is recommended every day; every little bit counts, so try to make transportation choices that will benefit the planet and contribute to your daily exercise total!

2. You’ll breathe cleaner air.
Most paints, as well as varnishes used on floors and furniture contain VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), which evaporate into the air and contribute to the hole in the ozone layer. The presence of these compounds has also been linked to health problems, including respiratory conditions, skin and eye irritations, headaches, and even more serious illnesses like lung cancer. So choosing “greener”, low-VOC or zero-VOC paints for your walls, and varnish for your floors and furniture, is not only better for the environment: it will benefit your whole family.

3. You’ll steer clear of loads of unnecessary chemicals.
Most laundry detergents on the market contain a mix of chemicals, including some that are petroleum-derived, to add fragrance, which can emit gases into the air and cause skin irritation; the same thing goes for common household cleaning products like all-purpose cleaners, window cleaners, bathroom and kitchen cleaners, which usually contain harsh ingredients like chlorine, bleach and ammonia. Being exposed to these is neither good for your lungs, skin, or eyes. Plus, manufacturing traditional cleaning products is harmful to the environment because of important CO2 emissions. By purchasing “green” cleaning products made from natural and plant-based ingredients, and concentrated versions that require less packaging, you’ll be making a better choice for the planet and your body, as well.

4. You’ll eat healthier.
Along with burning less fossil fuel from travelling long distances, locally-grown produce is also often cultivated without pesticides, which is so much better for the environment. The absence of pesticides and herbicides in organic and locally-grown fruits and veggies is much better for your health—studies have even shown the toxins contained in pesticides are likely to increase cancer risks. Other organic food products like locally-made bread, cereals, and yogurt also often contain healthier ingredients and fewer preservatives, making them better for your health as well. So help your local economy and choose organic food products from your region, for the environment and your health!
