There are many women in Hollywood whom are to be respected and admired. Particularly the older generation of stars, who show much poise, grace and class. Without further ado, here are our 10 favourites.
Williams has tackled so many industries in her long career: she was a model, was crowned Miss America in 1984, is a chart-topping R&B singer, and an actress, cbest known for her role as the stylishly evil Wilhelmina Slater on Ugly Betty. (She currently is part of the cast of Desperate Housewives.) To be so versatile is a trait to be admired, and Williams continues to do it all with class.
Berry has faced a lot of adversity in her life: she was a victim of domestic abuse, and now works to help other victims in similar situations. We can’t help but feel she’s earned her dose of happiness: a well-deserved Oscar in 2002, and she is now the proud mama of four-year-old Nahla.
The perpetually young-looking Stefani is surely to be admired. The singer and entrepreneur (she founded the successful fashion line, L.A.M.B.) continues to rock hard even alongside her newer and younger peers. Stefani definitely has staying power!
The Academy Award-winning actress uses her celebrity for good. Not only is she a political activist, Sarandon supports causes such as hunger and AIDS prevention. (She is a UN Goodwill Ambassador.)
The Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter is one of the most respected women in the music industry, 18 years after she first hit the scene. She’s battled breast cancer, is a political activist, and a philanthropist. Plus, she’s had no qualms about getting older (she proudly said once that 40 is the new 30); we’ll definitely adopt her attitude when we hit the big 4-0!
How can we make such a list and not give props to the fabulous Fey? Having such humour and wit is something to aspire to. Plus, to helm such a popular sitcom (30 Rock) and be a thinking man’s sex symbol, we’re envious!
Mirren has had a lengthy career, stemming with her work in theatre in the 1960s. Her body of work is impressive, and she’s been a presence at awards ceremonies these past few years. With such a respected filmography, we love that she still is up for doing silly movies, such as Teaching Mrs. Tingle and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
It seems Betty-mania hasn’t died down much! After an impressive 2009 and 2010, last year, she won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for Hot in Cleveland. We just hope that at 90, we’re still alive and kicking, and doing something we love as much as the former Golden Girls star does!
What’s not to love? She’s had a fantastic career for over three decades, resulting in 17 Oscar nominations with three wins… and her awards acceptance speeches are always witty and memorable! In an industry that tends to create roles for younger women, Streep is a mainstay of film, and we hope she continues to take over great roles for years to come.
The British star of films such as Howards End, Sense and Sensibility and Love Actually is the perfect role model to look up to. Thompson acted as a mentor to a then-18-year-old Kate Winslet while filming Sense and Sensibility, and Thompson even threatened to opt out of Brideshead Revisited after Miramax asked her young co-star Hayley Atwell to lose weight for her role. The studio quickly took back their request. We wish we could be as awesome and poised as she!
