Justin Bieber under fire for Anne Frank comment
(BANG) -Justin Bieber is facing a backlash for saying he hoped Anne Frank ''would have been a belieber''.

The 'Boyfriend' singer has caused public outrage for writing a message in a guestbook at the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam, suggesting the Holocaust victim would have been among his legions of devoted fans, with users on social networks branding him insensitive and ''self-serving''.

The 19-year-old pop superstar, who visited the attraction last Friday (04.12.13) while in the country for his 'Believe' world tour, wrote: ''Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber.''

The term is used to describe Justin's most diehard fans, who are generally teenage girls.

The message was publicized by the museum - which is situated in the house Anne and her family hid from the Nazis during World War II - on its Facebook page, and has sparked anger on social media networks for cheapening her legacy.

One commenter on the Facebook page blasted the 'Baby' hitmaker for turning the ''inspirational'' moment ''into something about yourself''.

Another called the stunt ''self-serving'' and added: ''[He] completely missed the lesson in front of him. Shows his complete LACK of Maturity. (sic)''

A spokesperson for the museum defended the singer, however, telling BBC News: ''He's 19. It's a crazy life he's living, he didn't mean bad ... and also it's nice that he made the effort, he didn't have to come.''

Anne became an important historical figure following her death for detailing the suffering of Jews in Europe during World War II in a diary, which was later published and used as the basis for many films and plays.

The teenager and her family went into hiding in a secret compartment of the Amsterdam home in 1942, but were betrayed two years later. The teenager later died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the age of 15, and the house was turned into a museum in her memory.

With all due respect, "dd", I think it is equally disrespectful for you to tell people to "get a life" when they point out the offensiveness and insensitivity of Justin Bieber's comment. Anne Frank represents a reprehensible chapter in history and her memory deserves to be treated respectfully.

Oh pa-lease Karen, All he meant was totally taken out of context. Justin did not mean any harm by his comment in the book, it was just a statement as a teen to a teen that he would hope she liked his music! I think you do need to GET A LIFE and stop reading bad into this!

Justin is so arrogant and self-centered, he showed no class and disrespected a girl who was a real hero for standing up to the Nazis. TOTALLY inappropriate behaviour.

Disgusting, disrespectful and distasteful. Further proof that education should take precedence over fame.

All he is saying is that Anne Frank continues to be an inspiration and he hopes that, if given a chance at freedom during current times, perhaps she would have enjoyed his music. To the media and negative public - give the guy a break already!!!

GET OFF OF HIM PEOPLE. It seems lately everyone is scrutinizing his every move and comment with distain. You can only wish you were shot to fame and money the way he was. Dont you think that coming from the poorest of the poor that you would be out of your element somewhat.. and he was so young.. it has gone to his head. He will come around.. teenagers are normally dimwitted and careless. I think of Anne Frank and I think how horrible it was for her and her family. I think Justin only meant that had she had the option she would have listened to his music and I am sure she would have.. albeit a little strange for her since this kind of music wasnt the norm. I do not believe he meant to insult or disrespect her. Also he is way too young to even appreciate the enormity of the brutality present under Hitler. My God people.. look for evil in your government ... not in the people that will suffer under them they same way she and her family did.

What a stupid and uneducated thing to say! I think she would have had more important things to think about like her family's health and safety, where her next meal was coming from etc. I'm sure being a "belieber" would've been the last thing on her mind you stupid spoiled pop star! Get a life and show some humanity and humilty for a change (you fucking idiot)!!

Finally! Someone with a bit of brains. They've all got definitions of what "he really meant to say" and they're all different!Full of excuses as to why he said it.Who really fucking cares. What he did say was really fucking STUPID and no CLASS!You're absolutely right. She had more important and difficult things to think about, such as the gas chambers, which ultimately took her and most of her family to their death.Saying something more appropriate in regards to her very short and miserable life would have been better. Being a teenager is NO EXCUSE. He's young but not stupid.Judging by what he said, maybe he is.!!If he came down a few notches, maybe he'd be able to think and speak with better understanding of what was really involved here, instead of yapping off about himself. Not everything is about Justin.Sure.. we've all said things we wish we could take back. We take responsibility though, say "sorry" and move on but he doesn't want to own up or take responsibility for his fuck-ups and he certainly isn't the victim! NOT THIS TIME AROUND! Yes, HUMANITY AND HUMILITY is something he's NOT familiar with. He'd better get cracking or he's going to have a poor life and it has nothing to do with money at all.

Justin did not grow up in poverty. He grew up in a very pretty town here in Ontario. His mother was a single mother but she had help from his grandparents. He is a silly kid that right now thinks the world revolves around him and in his world that is true. He will grow up and be more sensible for sure, well hopefully he will and reading the comments of readers he should be able to see how out of line he was with that comment. He was just as disrespectful when he accepted an award from our Prime Minister wearing overalls with one side flapping. Again arrogance of youth and fame.

After reading all that he wrote, and not the media's paraphrased version, I see nothing wrong with it.

For Anne to be one of his fans would suggest she would still be alive in his time; and if so, he would hope that his fans had the determination and spirit that she did. How's that bad?

Let's also keep in mind that he is 19 years old , has been in the media spotlight for many, many years, and with all the good things he has done and inspired his fans to do, we can cut him some slack and see things in the innocent light they were meant.

(FYI I'm not a fan of his music. Think it is cruddy pop. To each, his own.)

Although I don't dispute that Justin inadvertently turn Anne's situation into something about him, I feel people are blowing things out of proportion.

    1. The Museum proudly posted the comment to further their own cause - ie Big Celebrity visits them

    2. Justin publicly took an interest into seeing and learning more about the cities/ areas he is performing in - something not celebs do

    3. I would like to believe that Anne longed for her days to be 'normal' and to enjoy the pop culture of the day - in this case Justin Beiber is part of that

the kid is only 18, cut him some slack, he still has some growing up/ maturing to do - like many other 18 year olds.
