    Fall ‘09 Makeup Trends

    By Mariève Inoue
    Published August 04, 2009

Fall is back with its cooler weather, fresh fashion trends, and updated makeup looks that are more sophisticated than the naturally glowing face that was so essential for summer. We’ve got this season’s in looks for eyes, cheeks and lips, as well as our favourite products to achieve them.

The metallic smoky. The smoky eye look is a fall classic, but this year’s version is best achieved using metallic greys and plums. It is meant to be soft and smouldering, so skip the liquid eyeliner, and opt for a kohl pencil instead.
Compact Eye Shadow (1. Burgundy Malachite and 2. Chrome Cryolite) by Pürminerals, $13 each at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix

Vibrant contrasts. Another option for eyes is to use contrasting hues that complement each other well. Blend light, luminous shades of shadow (pink, beige) with darker, richer colours (olive green, purple, burgundy) that contrast with your natural eye colour to really make them stand out.
    3. Vibrations Eye Shadow Quartet by Lise Watier, $34 at Lise Watier counters

Colourful lashes. Coloured mascara is making a comeback! To make this look work for you, choose a hue that contrasts with your eye colour: brown-eyed gals will look lovely in virtually any hue (even royal blue!), while blue and green eyes will pop with darker ones like burgundy and plum.
    4. Miraculous Lash Mascara (Aquamarine) by QUO cosmetics, $14 at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix

Rosy + bronzed cheeks. Prolong (or fake!) your end-of-summer tan by mixing bronzing powder with pink blush on your cheeks. A great way to achieve the look is to choose a powder with hints of gold, or a pink and bronze duo.
    5. Bronze & Glow Duo by Lise Watier, $28 at Lise Watier counters
    6. Gilded Rose Marbleized Shimmer Powder by Estée Lauder, $42 at Estée Lauder counters

Nude lips. To leave the focus on the sophisticated, intense eye makeup that is en vogue this fall, lips are going nude—but that doesn’t mean bare! Go for lipstick or gloss in shades of light pink or beige.
    7. Joli Rouge Lipstick (Blé Sauvage) by Clarins, $27 at Clarins counters
    8. Eiffel Tower Lipstick (Champagne) by QUO cosmetics, $15 at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix
