Halloween is a great occasion to get creative with your look and really make a bold statement. And with the recent revival of vampire popularity in popular culture stemming from hit books, movies and series (like Twilight and True Blood), what better way to glam up your makeup this Halloween than by doing it vamp style? We’ve got some techniques and pointers.

Face
Any vampire needs to look like she hasn’t spent much time in the sun—or in daylight, for that matter—so choose a foundation a few shades lighter than your regular one, and apply the palest loose powder you can find over it. Stay as far as you can from your blush and bronzer for this look—the more deadly and pale your complexion, the better. Going for a Twilight-inspired vampire look? Add some shimmer powder to your cheeks, nose, forehead, décolleté and arms so your skin glitters.

Eyes
For eyes, your choice of makeup depends on how dramatic you want your look to be. The obvious choices are either an exaggerated smoky eye using a combination of charcoals and greys or, for a scarier take, one that includes red as well. Experiment with different combinations, but the important tools to have handy are a black kohl pencil, liquid eyeliner, and several types of brushes so you can blend the hues together and get creative with the eyeliner.

Play up the drama on your smoky eye by extending the shadow out further towards your temples, and inwards towards your nose. Also, don’t hesitate to draw a thick line under your eyes and blend with a cotton swab until you get the effect you want. Don’t overdo it, though: the key is to find a balance between scary and beautiful so that you give off a seemingly authentic vampire vibe.

Don’t hesitate to add false lashes—whether plain or more eccentric with feathers, jewels, or glitter—to this look.

Note: On an ordinary day, we’d recommend to not put the focus on more than one feature, but for Halloween and such an intense look, you can go all out with really made up eyes, and dark lips and nails!
