More and more fashionistas and beauty junkies are trying to make choices that are less harmful towards the environment, but it’s not always easy to completely change your approach. Why not take it one step at a time? We’ve got five tips to help you make eco-smarter beauty purchases.

Avoid double packaging. If your moisturizer comes in a box, chances are it’s a box that contains a bottle, or tube. Although some brands offer products in recycled and / or recyclable boxes with eco-friendly alternatives like vegetable ink, in this case, less is definitely more… friendly towards the environment, that is. Even better: opt for products that have no packaging at all, like shampoo bars, moisturizer bars, and massage bars (hello, LUSH cosmetics!) instead of their more common liquid counterparts.

Check the ingredients. Fewer chemicals make a product better for your skin and for the environment. Plant- and mineral-based ingredients are the best choices where ingredients are concerned. For example, L’Oréal has developed Pro-XylaneTM, an anti-ageing agent derived from beech trees using green chemistry criteria, which means it’s better for your skin, creates less waste, and uses less energy and resources. It is used in skincare lines for several of its brands, such as Lancome, Vichy, and L’Oréal Paris.

Look for certification. Ecocert is an organization that sets certain standards for the production of eco-friendly products in regards to their ingredients, as well as the processes that are used. The certification is not specific to cosmetics, but there are a number of companies that have obtained certification for some (usually not all) of their products.

Some Canadian cosmetics brands that hold Ecocert certification? Druide and Green Beaver!

Opt for larger sizes. Buying larger sizes can be a good way to have to purchase new products less frequently and therefore cut down on waste. Purchasing bigger formats is usually also an economical choice, so not only will you be considering the planet—your bank account will reap the benefits as well!

Try samples before you buy. When new products come out, there are often samples available, whether it’s moisturizer, makeup remover, or even foundation or concealer. These allow you to make sure that the product is really the perfect one for you, and also avoids the need to purchase a full sized product that may not work for your skin type or coloration, and having it sit in the back of your cupboard, eventually creating more waste. So try before you buy!

How about natural skin care products? All Burt's Bees products are natural. All of its products, including the new Anti-Blemish Solutions line, are over 95% natural and never made with parabens, phthalates, petro-chemicals or sulfates, or tested on animals. I'm a BzzAgent and am trying the line now. So far - (environmentall)-guilt free and blemish free!
