    Denim

Synonym(s): Jean, Dungaree (although not correct)
    Category: Fabrics, Embellishments, Textures, Prints
Denim is a twill-woven cotton fabric. The sturdy cotton fibres are an indigo blue yarn and gray or mottled white yarn. There is much debate as to the origins of denim, but we do know that the fabric originated in France, and that it was introduced to the American public for sale in the 1850s by Levi Strauss. The first commercially-available pair were overalls. A century and a half later, denim shapes still include overalls, but now they also include the obvious five pocket style, trousers, jackets, shirts, bags, and more. Evening gowns have even been made from it. Denim is also available in uncountable washes.
