    Plaid

    Synonym(s): Tartan
    Category: Fabrics, Embellishments, Textures, Prints
Plaid originated in Scotland and originally, every family had its own plaid. Plaid is made up of lines and squares in different colours (as few as two colours can be used, although most plaids utilize three and up). These prints have thin lines running perpendicularly and squares running paralllel to each other. A variation on plaid is buffalo check. This is a two-colour plaid made simply of alternating squares of black and another colour (frequently red). Sometimes faded black is visible on the secondary colour, sometimes not.
