We do almost everything with our hands—which means that our nails are exposed to everything from soil when gardening to detergent when doing the dishes after a meal. So how do you keep them looking beautiful and healthy? Follow our essential tips!
Use hand cream obsessively. Moisture is important in keeping your nails (and hands!) healthy; keep a tube of lotion in your purse, a bottle of it by the sink, and reapply any time your hands are exposed to water.
Keep a nail file in your purse. Nails with jagged edges or that break off can get caught in things around you. Make sure you keep a nail file in your purse (it can be a small one) so you are armed to smooth out any situation that occurs and prevent further breakage.
Only file in one direction. Although many have a tendency to file their nails using a back-and-forth motion, this can actually cause them to split! Make sure to always file from left to right, or from right to left, but be consistent.
Don’t skip the base coat. It’s an extra step to your nail care routine, but it’s worth applying a base coat before colour to protect your nails.
Use acetone-free nail polish remover. Although all types of remover contain solvents that dry out nails, stick with one that is acetone-free to minimize the damage. And try not to use it too often: a well-done manicure should last you a whole week.
Use products that are as natural as possible. Look for ingredients like fluoride and calcium in products, and when possible, whip up some natural nail recipes at home.
Wear rubber gloves when doing household chores. This will help to keep chemical products that could strip the moisture from your nails away from them. |
