The Montreal designer shares the season’s hottest trends

The fall 2012 edition of Montreal Fashion Week began on February 6, where Mélissa Nepton unveiled her creations for next winter. Faithful to the classy simplicity she is reputed for, Nepton took us into her very own Nordic universe.

But let’s not skip seasons, especially given that brighter days are upon us! Inspired by her wares, we sat down with the designer to talk spring and summer trends for 2012, and received sound advice along the way. But we simply couldn’t keep it to ourselves. Below, our exchange with Nepton—so you can get inspired, too!

What’s in store for Mélissa Nepton fans this spring?

”Light tunics which play on transparency and pleats.”

Your collections boast a multitude of textures. How can we cleverly pair them?

“The key is to improvise. Be daring! Pair them as you see fit.”

You’re reputed for your neutral colour palette: how can one brighten up a sober ensemble?

“Neutral colours go well with white. Beige can also be worn with brightly-coloured or pastel accessories.”

Which essential piece of clothing will flatter most body types?

“3/4 sleeved shirts. They can be worn over tank tops, while remaining unbuttoned, and make the silhouette appear to be in motion without compromising the overall look.”

You make use of silk in your collections. What is the best way to care for this fabric?

“Silk can be hand-washed in cold water, and machine washed in the gentle cycle. The texture can become a little rough, but remains natural-looking”.
