    Sugar and Your Health

    By Myreille Simard

How much sugar should I consume?
Between 45 and 65% of your daily caloric consumption should come from sugars, and no more than 10% of that should come from added sugar. Many people largely surpass the recommended daily intake.

To find out how many calories you should consume each day, consult our Caloric Needs Calculator.

8 ways to consume less sugar
    - Think twice before adding sugar (including honey, maple syrup, etc.) to anything. Learn to enjoy the natural taste of different foods.

    - Limit your consumption of fruit juice, as it contains plenty of sugar and fewer nutrients and fibre than an actual fruit. An alternative is to dilute your juice with a bit of water.

    - Avoid sweet foods and drinks that are nothing but empty calories, such as sodas and candy.

    - Replace chocolate spread on toast with peanut butter, which contains seven less grams of carbohydrates per spoonful.

    - End your meal with chocolate pudding instead of chocolate cookies. Chocolate pudding has less sugar and is more nutritious.

    - Opt for flavoured coffee in the morning, such as French Vanilla. You’ll likely add less sugar (if any at all), since the scent will give off the impression that your coffee tastes sweeter.

    - Replace milk chocolate with dark chocolate (minimum 70% cocoa). Dark chocolate has less sugar and is better for your health.

    - Replace your morning croissant or muffin with a piece of whole wheat toast.
