    Combination Workouts to Try

    By Vicki Karigiannis
    Published June 08, 2009

Different types of physical activity all have their own benefits, whether they strengthen your core, build muscle, give you a cardio workout, relieve stress or merely open up your mind and body. No matter your age, shape or size, we’ve got three popular combination workouts for you to try. Fusing two individual trends to create an altogether different workout, they provide you with double the benefits in one single workout session!

    Pilates + Boxing = Piloxing
What is it? The latest workout craze in L.A. right now (adepts include Hilary Duff), Piloxing was created by Swedish personal trainer Viveca Jensen. The dichotomy between boxing’s intensity and Pilates’ gracefulness works your core and provides for one extreme workout. It requires you to wear weighted gloves (usually 1lb. each), burning calories and building muscle as you throw tough punches, then recover with the poised Pilates moves.

    Yoga
    + Pilates = Yogilates
    What is it?
Created by Jonathan Urla in 1997 but still standing the test of time, this workout helps develop body-mind awareness. It starts off with Pilates mat exercises combined with Hatha yoga poses, then moves on to more intense standing moves. The combination thus provides the best of both worlds, benefits of which include helping with coordination and stability, allowing for relaxation, aiding with weight loss, and even helping with joint and muscle pain.

    Cycling + Yoga = Cy-Yo
    What is it?
Fitness instructor Curt Dalton first came up with the concept of this holistic cardio workout. Helping achieve both a sense of well-being as well as a fit body, a Cy-Yo session begins with a 10 minute yoga warm-up, followed up by 40 minutes of cycling, all the while paying attention to your energy centre and breathing. The session then ends with a 10-minute yoga warm-down, creating an overall sense of calm and positive energy.
