Jake Benjamin Gyllenhall was born on December 19, 1980 in Los Angeles, California.
Born into an acting family (his father is a director, his mother a screenwriter, and his sister is actress Maggie Gyllenhall), he started out his career with a few minor television and film roles. His breakout films were 1999’s October Sky and 2001’s Donnie Darko. Roles in The Good Girl, The Day After Tomorrow, and Jarhead soon followed, but it was his role as Heath Ledger’s love interest, Jack Twist, in Brokeback Mountain, that garnered him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. His close friendship with Ledger led to Gyllenhaal being given the honour of being his daughter’s, Matilda Rose, godfather. He and actress Kirsten Dunst ended their two-year relationship in 2004, and is currently dating actress Reese Witherspoon, with whom he co-starred in Rendition. |
