Did someone say “slumber party”? No matter how old we get, we never tire of a chick flick movie marathon. So, get into your most comfy PJs, grab the popcorn, ice cream and bon bons, and settle onto the couch for a night of cinematic fun with your girlfriends. Here are five films that can’t be beat at a girls-only gathering.
The Vow
Year released: 2012
Starring: Channing Tatum, Rachel McAdams, and Jessica Lange
After a car accident puts Paige (McAdams) in a coma, only to then wake up with amnesia, her husband Leo (Tatum) goes about courting her in order to make her fall in love with him again. Tatum’s role as the loving and devoted hubby cemented his place as one of today’s sexiest romantic leading men in Hollywood. As if this story couldn’t be any sweeter, we get teary-eyed upon learning the film was inspired by a real-life couple’s experience. Pass the tissues, please.
Bridesmaids
Year released: 2011
Starring: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, and Melissa McCarthy
If a night of giggles and guffaws is what you and your gal pals are after, then look no further than this movie about a wacky and oddly-matched bridal party. Maid of Honor Annie (Wiig) wants to do right by bride and bestie Lillian (Rudolph) by performing the requisite MOH duties, but it looks like bridesmaid Helen (Byrne) is trying to upstage her at every turn. Dubbed “the female version of The Hangover”, this hit comedy of last summer proves that girls can be just as crudely hilarious as boys.
Sex and the City
Year released: 2008
Starring: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, and Chris Noth
They were the best quartet of gal pals on TV for six seasons, from 1998 to 2004, and their jump from the small screen to the silver screen was a film adaptation that did the show justice. Lovable Carrie (Parker) and her gal pals—sexpot Samantha (Cattrall), feisty Miranda (Nixon), and demure Charlotte (Davis)—are in top form in this film, which sees Carrie finally walking down the aisle with Big (Noth). Or does she? If you missed these girls when the series ended, you’ll love watching them bond again in this movie. And don’t forget the cosmos!
13 Going on 30
Year released: 2004
Starring: Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, and Judy Greer
Sweet and naïve Jenna (Garner) finds herself to be a pimply, braces-laden teenager one minute and a sexy, grown-up woman the next with a cool job, a hot boyfriend, and swanky digs. Problem is, she has no idea how she arrived at her seemingly fabulous adult life. Jenna winds up searching for her loyal childhood buddy, Matt (Ruffalo), but it turns out somewhere along the way, she ditched him for the popular crowd. Will Jenna be able to prove to Matt she’s not the mean girl he thinks she is? This fantasy rom-com will put a smile on your face for its cute storyline.
Dirty Dancing
Year released: 1987
Starring: Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, and Cynthia Rhodes
Set in 1963 at a resort hotel in the Catskills, this romantic drama is filled with steamy, sexy dance numbers and a memorably catchy soundtrack. The chemistry between “Baby” Houseman (Grey), an innocent but strong-willed 17-year-old, and Johnny (Swayze), the gorgeous, rebel dance instructor, is almost palpable through the screen. Even after twenty-five years since this cult classic was first released, it’s still a sure bet for making your next get-together with the girls the time of your lives.
