    Herbs that Heal

    There are plenty of herbs that are not just great for adding spice and flavour to your meals—many of them have natural healing properties too. Here are five herbs that are great to have on hand for common ailments.
     
    Cayenne Pepper
    This red hot chilli pepper contains a resin-like substance known as capsaicin, which has been shown to reduce blood cholesterol, improve blood circulation and other cardiovascular benefits. Capsaicin is also known for helping to relieve a stuffy nose or congested lungs. Add a dash or two of cayenne pepper to sauces, meats, and eggs for a fiery health kick.
     
    Ginger
    The ginger root is a natural spice that has a familiar smell and pungent taste. It is commonly used for getting rid of nausea or aiding with digestive problems. Ginger is also known to be good for circulation and arthritis relief. Make a tea using thinly sliced pieces of ginger and boiling water, and add honey and lemon for taste.

    Fennel Seeds
    These seeds have a sweet and aromatic taste, similar to licorice and anise, and are known to be an excellent remedy for indigestion. Chew raw fennel seeds after a heavy meal, or crush the seeds and use them to brew a flavourful tea.
     
    Garlic
    This is by far the most popular herb that has been scientifically researched for its medicinal properties. Garlic contains a compound called allicin, a powerful antioxidant, which has anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. It can be used as a preventative measure to help stave off the common cold or the flu. Studies have shown that garlic also helps to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, thus reducing the risk of a heart attack. Research also suggests that garlic may help to protect against certain forms of cancer such as stomach, intestinal and colorectal cancers. Use chopped garlic in sauces and dressing, or roast garlic so that it can be mashed and used as a spread on bread.
     
    Oregano
    This popular herb in Mediterranean cooking contains thymol, rosmarinic acid and several other phytonutrients which studies have shown act as powerful antioxidants. It is commonly used as a natural aid to treat dry, chesty coughs as well as bronchitis and asthma. Add fresh oregano to sauces or season meats with it to take advantage of its health benefits.
