When pole dancing as a workout first emerged a few years ago, it gained quite a bit of a following. There is no doubt that—aside from fulfilling every man’s fantasy—pole dancing definitely yields fitness results. We talked with Viridiana Bustos, professional dancer, choreographer and director of the Centre de Danse de Montréal, and she discussed the benefits of this unique and ultra-feminine workout with us.

How does pole dancing work the body?
“This discipline is a very good way to get in shape. You need to know that it’s a combination of muscle training and dance… so it is definitely a challenge! Pole dancing really works the upper body, and demands a good amount of coordination to be able to follow the beat of the music. You leaves the class out of breath, and a feeling that your muscles got a workout. After a few a lessons, you’ll definitely start noticing  changes in your body.”

How does a typical class go down?
“We start with an intense 25-minute warm-up for the entire body, including push-ups. We focus on the arms and the abdominals, as well as the legs. We also prep the neck, the shoulders, the hips, and the ankles. At each session, we practice new moves, which we then integrate into a dance. Since we use an accessory—the pole—we need to integrate the technique first and foremost. To maximize pole dancing’s effect, it’s ideal to take two one-hour classes per week. Besides, the discipline blends well with other types of exercises.”

What abilities are required to practice pole dancing?
“Coordination, musicality, as well as perseverance. When you begin, you need to know that it won’t be easy. You need to listen to the instructor to learn how to hold the pole, and use your arms and legs. But once you get it, it is very satisfying; you’ll see results, and want to keep at it!”

What are some of the other benefits of pole dancing?
“Aside from developing inner strength, agility and flexibility, your memory also gets a workout! Since we integrate dance into the course, choreography needs to be learned, as well as following the beat of the music. Pole dancing is also an excellent way of learning to feel comfortable in your own skin and of gaining self-confidence.”
