Club Med for Fitness

When vacation meets performance
Whatever our daily routine, our weeks always seem fully packed, often too much so. Luckily, there comes a time to get away. And there are as many ways to celebrate this time for R&R as there are vacationers. Here is a vacation spot designed for fitness buffs by fitness buffs. The destination? Club Med in Sandpiper Bay, Florida.

Brand new and all about sports
The resort giant leans more and more towards athletic-type vacations with its high-level academies. Among the lot, fitness buffs will find yoga, fitness, golf and tennis programs.

“With today’s fast-paced lifestyle, going on vacation enables us to recharge. We can make time with family and rebalance ourselves”, says Xavier Mufraggi, CEO of Club Med in North America. And it’s precisely active families or those in search of activities that the new and improved resort aims to attract.

The latter was renovated to the tune of $25 million dollars last year. A large part of this sum was invested in building sport facilities. The result: it is now home to the International Academy of group tennis.

Grab your rackets!
In Club Med fashion, the concept takes the form of an all-inclusive. However, out with tanning excesses and the typical overload of margaritas!

Here, with the Club House fitness centre and its 21 courts, the action takes place on the court. The calendar is chock full of training sessions and tennis competitions for children and adults, pros and beginners alike.

Acrobatics
That said, with tennis on site, Club Med means business. At the helm of the fitness program are Gabriel Jaramillo and Greg Breunich. While the former trained eight number #1 international tennis champions, namely André Agassi et Maria Sharapova, the latter comes to us from the vice-presidency at IMG, the international sports agency.

“Our mandate is to train champions. We must prepare athletes starting at a young age”, says Jaramillo. Each summer, young athletes head to Sandpiper on family vacations. A private training style stay awaits them in order to perfect their technique, their sport, and their drive.

What’s more
Because diligence isn’t the end all and be all (we are, after all, on vacation), water park, circus school and art studio are also on the agenda. A pool with a view on the ocean, a wellness centre, and luxurious spaces with spaces reserved exclusively for parents await mom and dad.

But who knows, maybe golf will occupy much of your stay? If you’re not too busy hitting the tennis court yourself, that is!
