A few tips, courtesy of Oakley
For a few years now, yoga has garnered many adepts, for both its physical and well-being benefits. But what to wear to a yoga class? We spoke with Marie-Eve Guay, marketing manager (women’s division) at Oakley Canada for some advice.

Oakley’s approach to yoga
Prior to our chat with Guay, we examined a few of the brand’s latest offerings. The result: gorgeous pieces that also offer functionality. And, after we began our interview, she shared: “These pieces aren’t specifically made for yoga, but do have the same technologies found in yogawear.”

A question of repose
But what makes for a choice yoga item? “They need to offer comfort as you move, fluidity, and the materials must breathe,” explains the expert.

Talking specifics, she goes on to say that to facilitate the long movements of yoga, which includes stretching, opt for a pair of pants that are extendable in the abdominal area. Since the latter conforms to your body as it moves, it’s also an ideal piece for a spinning class, as it doesn’t put pressure on your belly as you sit. This feature therefore makes these pants a versatile piece, when chosen strategically.

To make a proper choice, the right materials are also key. Front and centre in Oakley’s yoga-friendly gear are spandex and lycra. These synthetic fabrics allow moisture to escape, and boast antimicrobial properties to keep odours at bay. That said, “three of our tops are partially made of cotton (15%), and are also equipped with this moisture-release system. These clothes not only have style, but they breathe, too!”

Let’s talk style
“To perform in style, that’s what Oakley advocates,” says Guay. “That is to say, putting on clothes that allow us to look good, that fits our body as well as our personality.”

It seems every teeny, tiny detail was thought out: “Two new sports bras are available this spring. They’re lightweight, ideal for yoga. They are also extendable, and are partly made of mesh for better breathability.” Above all, Guay says that the collection has been designed so that these pieces can be worn underneath oversized tops of similar colours, acting as a style tool.

From the brand’s offerings, we opt for clothing that’s specially-designed to be put on before and after our workout session. From the new collection, our fave: this throw-slash-top that keeps us warm during our stretches, and also keeps us stylish while shopping after class.

A few tips:
-Make sure all clothes are stretchy so as to avoid impeding blood flow, as well as your movements;
-Fitted pieces as well as shorts allow you to better observe your body’s positioning, for optimal alignment;
-When it comes to comfort, makes sure the straps of your top (and/or bra) are adjusted properly;
-If you’re practicing hot yoga, avoid clothes that are uncomfortable and will likely stick to your skin;
-Clothing with a matted finish can actually camouflage your silhouette’s imperfections, unlike a glossy finish, which accentuates them;
-For an affordable yet stylish yoga wardrobe, focus on purchasing a versatile pair of pants in a neutral colour, and pairing that with a number of inexpensive different colour tops;
-To make the right choice, always ask the advice of the experts in-store and always read the labels!

1. Runner Capri, $65.
2. Align Bra, $45.
3. Long Sleeve Infinity Throw, $55.
