I really wish the grocery stores etc where I lie paid us for returning bottles and cans...They do it in Kamloops, where I use to live, and seriously every cent helps...Northern Ontario doesnt seem to do it. Do they do this where you live?

Recycle by transy
Monday, November 16 2009 at 1:18 pm

Today is recycle day where I live. Where I am, we don't have bluebox, graybox, and greenbox.  I have one bluebox recycle day and they take everything at that time except for greenbox stuff like food scraps. Since I am a rural dweller I am able to compost anyway. I don't put my bluebox out every week because  I don't really have much to put in it. Usually it only has newspapers and flyers. These all come free in the mailbox - about 4 a week (this seems to me an excessive amount of waste). Anyway what with all the newspaper and an occasional coffee jar, cereal box or vegetable can I put my bluebox out  once every 2 months.

FYI  - even if you don't put your recycle every week you don't get a credit on your tax bill.

Re-Use by transy
Sunday, November 15 2009 at 3:15 pm

This is a the really easy step for me (seeing as I'm such a packrat). I have been hoarding things for as long as I can remember. Seems like I'm always saying "Don't throw that out".

I re-use: used clothing to make smaller clothing for babies or dolls, quilt pieces (see photo), or just for rags.

I re-use: used cards, wrapping paper and gift bags

I re-use: dishes with cracks or chip for mosaic projects (see photo) More pics of my pieces are posted in the Crafty Ladies group.

I re-use: bathroom fixtures like faucets. I have an old-fashioned tap in my garden, it's jammed in the crack of a large rock (see photo)

I re-use: scraps of wood. I have made snowman families and book-ends (see photo)

I could go on, but these are the top 5 that came to mind. I love creating new things out of old. You get a lot of unique, one-of-a-kind items. Not mass-produced, mass-marketed things that have no quality

Re-use your imagination to see what you can re-use!

Reduce by transy

I think this is one of the most important steps. If you reduce what you buy then you have less to re-use or recycle and also less in the landfill. One of the easiest things I have reduced is the use of paper products. I no longer use paper towels. I keep a stack of rags that I can either wash or throw out (depends on what I have cleaned up with them). No paper napkins or paper plates.  Sometimes I use a page of newspaper (the ones that get delivered free) for cleaning up certain types of  mess.
I have also cut down on christmas wrap and cards by remaking last years into new ones for this year.
This was so easy for us that I don't know why I used any of those products in the first place. Along with saving trees, and amount of garbage, it also saves quite a bit of money.
