Lolita by ekafaye

February 27, 2008

My sister gave me a copy of Vladimir Nabokov's "Lolita" for Christmas.  It is one of those controversial classics of which I had just a slight idea as to what it is about.  I am in the midst of it right now and I absolutely cannot put it down!  (Mike had to pull the book out of my hands last night after I feel asleep with it on the couch.)

Yes, I knew even before I had picked it up that it is a story of an older man who has a love affair with a young girl, but I guess the eternal optimist in me was hoping that would be a story of beauty, love, and the young girl's reciprocated adoration.  I have a very open mind, but I have to admit that I'm having a hard time with this book.  The way Humbert describes his desires makes me cringe!  I am having a hard time liking "Lolita"...and having an even harder time admitting I am having a hard time liking the book!  I suppose i went into the novel with this preconceived notion that I would adore the story...that I should adore the story.  (I will admit that Lo's stubborn and difficult personality very much reminds me of my own and I get a laugh out of her sometimes.)

I still have 100 pages left, but perhaps I'll feel better once there is some "closure" to the novel.

I wonder what other's thoughts have been to this book?

I personally loved Lolita. I read it a few years back, and although it was quite a dense read for me back then, I thought it was fascinating and very well-written. Yes, the subject matter is a bit taboo but surprisingly I actually kind of sympathized with Humbert at the end.. in my opinion, it is a great classic and there's quite a twist at the end !

I hope you enjoy the rest of it. Let us know!

Thanks for your reply!  I always love hearing other's opinions of books.  You've really got me curious as to the twist at the end!

Well, I finished the book on Thursday, and I have to say that I really did enjoy it.  I can see how you say you sympathized with Humbert...I felt a bit for him too at the end.  His obsession really did just totally consume him.

Yes, it did.. and you can't help but feel that he couldn't help it! A great book to accompany that would be Lo's Diary by Pia Pera. It's a more contemporary novel but written from Lolita's point of view - it's quite disturbing but intriguing at the same time!

I'm glad you enjoyed it, though!
