About Me
|
This is a very lengthy depiction of myself; it is very difficult to summarize a life that was lived, in hindsight, not in the `fast lane` but in the `runaway lane`. The runaway lane is commonly found on mountain roads to allow a driver in peril to swerve uphill rather than go over the edge. The twists and turns of the road of life often led me to staring into the `proverbial abyss`, the one that if you look into it long enough it begins to look into you. My life was continually thwarted by an infinitesimal acclivity.

`Writing is a product of silence.` ~Carrie Latet
I began this post as a short “about me” to place on my profile page quite a while back, a bazillion rewrites later and every time I want to cut a sentence or paragraph to shorten this particular piece it seems to lose its flow in the content. I have decided to put it here with my normal reviews; I hope that those who have joined this group will humour me through the length. While looking for a suitable quote you can only imagine how many there are, mostly written by famous authors and I have decided to use a few throughout this composition.
ABOUT ME
I`m not a very good writer, but I`m an excellent rewriter. ~James Michener
As someone who has tested free software and has no fear in downloading and trying out these programs I feel that it is also my duty to expand and let you know the sources of my experience and extent of my knowledge of computers. I have been working at computers, notice I did not say ‘with`, ‘over`, ‘for`, ‘or` ‘ in`, I said ‘at`; I have worked at computers, in front of a screen, with a keyboard and a mouse since my first data entry job way back in 1979. I spent just under a year working in the classified ads of a community newspaper in North Vancouver, B.C. before being promoted to the display advertising accounting department and the one-write system. I guess that may seem like a step down from the computer but it was actually a step up in the accounting department. Over the following years the data-entry experience served me well in many jobs, my occupation is as I have stated, I am a permanent temporary.
A data-entry operator does just that, you make a bundle of invoices or whatever needs to be entered, in my case the individual invoices for classified ads and make sure each batch when completed equalled the amount you had calculated before entry. I might add here, that my passion has always been to write but my employment positions seemed always to be in accounts. I hate numbers, they are the only axiom we encounter; numbers don`t lie, one plus one will never equal more than two.
Life can`t ever really defeat a writer who is in love with writing, for life itself is a writer`s lover until death - fascinating, cruel, lavish, warm, cold, treacherous, constant. ~Edna Ferber
As usual, I digress, and we will get back to my knowledge of computers. When I was entering data in the classified department we used telephone numbers as account numbers, because, and I am stating the obvious here, it was what all classified ads needed and had in common; an easy identifier. There was one major problem though, people moved and phone numbers were reassigned and sometimes up to ten different names would come up under that number and I would have to go through and find the invoice`s owner to make sure the bill was mailed to the proper person and address. This was time consuming and frustrating; it was after all 1979 or 1980 and at that time I had to phone Toronto for tech support and there were problems with my computer when it rained – imagine that, in North Vancouver, and tech support was just that, tech support, (DOS), not your software program has issues and we can fix that to suit your needs. I decided to find a way, I took the computer`s manual home, and anything I could find to help and found a way to write-off thousands and thousands of well-aged and no longer viable invoices. I worked some overtime and that was that, I had my first chance to control, manipulate and configure a software program. The only thing that was not bang on was the fact that (and this was not my dominion) the information went to the printers (in Toronto) – invoices only – of course the paper was and still is published in Vancouver, and a lot of people received an invoice that said they owed the company ($0.00) nothing. It never ceased to amaze me how many phone calls we encountered from people issued a bill with a balance of zero. I am sure it had to be curiosity, not stupidity.
In conclusion, I want to tell all that read this that I am not a ‘reviewer` in the sense that I can tell you all about a product, its accuracy and its developers; I merely download, try it out, check out its features and use it in reference to a ton of other programs that claim to do the same, only better, faster, more thoroughly than the competition. There is obviously the hope that it will catch on like wild fire in a trial version and make a ton of money, if it doesn`t, it becomes freeware and I am determined to stick to my favourite price – free. I realized early on in my endeavour to find programs that would do what I wanted them to that there are more and more out there all the time, and freeware sites have an unlimited wealth of downloads – with no guarantee. The end-user licenses are basic disclaimers for any bugs, problems, crashes; they take no liabilities for any thing that may occur during installation and use of the software. So when you click on “I agree” remember that no matter what changes are about to be made to your registry and how many files and folders are added you will not be able to blame the source. At least be sure you have a back-up program, a good uninstaller (I recommend Revo in an earlier review and I have yet to find one that suits me better and I do keep trying to do that). You may want to keep your eyes on a site called ‘Giveaway of the Day` that offers shareware programs for free for twenty-four hours and in most cases you are given the serial key, license or registration number. I mentioned this site at some point as well because I do go there daily and have been lucky enough to find some good software there and the reviews on site and in real time will never disappoint you when you want to make your final decision to download or not to download.
Writing is a way of talking without being interrupted. ~Jules Renard, Journal, 10 April 1895
Something else to keep in mind is that you take your chances with any and all freeware programs no matter how many stars in the reviews in the description. Also, remember that when a program is described as ‘open-source` it means that anyone experienced in computer science, writing code, software development in general, can incorporate it into that particular software. Open source is also referred to as open -ended, meaning the same, it is not complete – it is open for editing and can be altered to improve the end result in most cases. I totally support this type of freeware because I have found that for the most part, there is a sort of tacit respect among program developers and I see it as a valuable learning tool for all of them. I suspect these programs are written by students of computer sciences in order to complete their degrees. I am only speculating here, but from the huge amount of freeware out there, and so many programs written to satisfy the end result, I believe that releasing the work is a way to gain recognition, add to your resume, and if you consider that most request a donation in lieu of payment, makes total sense. The most popular software giants refer to their ‘works in progress` as ‘beta` programs. Beta programs test and gather information to improve upon or make additions in the melioration and execution of the final product. Like a favourite laundry detergent (no need for names) that consistently say ‘the new and improved` or ‘better than ever` or ‘now with` or ‘now without` each release claims rectification of any prior ‘bugs`, optimization, enhancement, and refinement in revivification.
Every author in some way portrays himself in his works, even if it be against his will. ~Goethe
At the risk of being a little ad hominem or more personal I will expand a bit here and say that after ten years of managing the paperwork at a wholesale jewellery business with the only gem cutter for three provinces, I was forced to move on due to the owner taking a long sabbatical. I am a divorcee and I raised two children, alone for the most part, with an ex-husband who was legally prohibited from any contact with us. My immediate family and only support system live five hours away so when I say ‘alone` I mean just that; temporary assignments allowed me to have much needed flexibility and if an emergency arose another temp could step in for me. It did not allow for any sort of health or dental benefits so I took my chances. I did attend university for three years in that time, but unfortunately I had to discontinue my pursuit of a bachelor of education (I wanted to teach English Literature at the high school level) due to personal health problems; I have worked in upwards of seventy and counting different establishments. I did everything from serving a wine and cheese at a legislative building in honour of the Governor General of Canada to office administration. There was never a shortage of employment if I was willing to give anything a try and I admit I did take an assignment or two just for ‘fun`. An example of these ‘fun` types of jobs included sitting in a vault and ‘sequencing` freshly minted paper currency and a one night stand as a dishwasher in one of the largest, ritziest hotels in the city. The dishwashing job gave me a whole new respect for anyone that starts out with that particular type of employment, it was the most physically exhausting job I have ever done and it is unbelievable that it was the lowest paying job I ever accepted at that time.
When I started at the aforementioned newspaper it was in the credit and collections department phoning people to ‘remind` them of overdue bills and make arrangements for payment. This much loathed position would continually become a nightmare for me employment wise; my post-employment assessments must have been positive because I had my fair share of assignments in this field. They now give you the pretty title of ‘customer service rep`, not ‘collector of overdue bills and be mean to people that you know don`t have the money`...,believe me when I say loathing it comes from the heart. Having said that, I can assure you that I use this vast experience of seeing the inside of so many establishments, observing operations and having to learn someone`s job within three hours or three days, to set the parameters with which I attack every software program. I sit in front of a screen, the program is the establishment; the operations are the setup, configuration or options of said program and its overall appearance (GUI), ease of use and integration with other software is the time to familiarize and apply the program. I hope you will continue to follow me on my quest to find the most trustworthy, user-friendly, secure and best of all free computer software.

| Go nuts!! I`d love them. Have you tried Stumble Upon, its awesome for what you were talking about with the searching, and Side Web is a great Firefox Add-on that opens similar sites (or tabs) to the page you are on. Believe me, Cinna, as far as the web is concerned I have been everywhere and then some (teehee). |

Since you like animals, freebies and maybe a good laugh. If you type in a web search using hillarious or funny animals you after putting a side the content you do not want to see. You`ll get to see funny home videos. You might even come accross a few good little skitts...I have viewed this way a few very intelligent animals...or simply cute ones...
Talk to you later.
