A simple iPhone, Android, BlackBerry + Windows Phone 7 comparison
Gone are the days when cell phones’ main purpose was to allow us to make phone calls when away from home. From checking email, to connecting to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, to getting directions to wherever we’re going, smartphones give us many more possibilities. But which one (if any) is right for you? We’ve got the main differences between four popular phones and operating systems (think Mac and Windows, but on a phone) on the market: iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone 7.
Three years after its original launch, it seems like Apple’s iPhone is everywhere you turn. An über popular choice, many Mac and PC users swear by their iPhone for calling, texting, emailing, checking the weather, and soso much more.
Your best choice if you: Use a Mac computer, since it syncs seamlessly with applications like iTunes, iPhoto, and iCal.
What we
Its seamless, streamlined design (so sexy!);
Its quick reactiveness (when you touch the screen, action happens instantly);
The myriad of downloadable apps available that can help you do everything from create a budget to compose a music track or “transform” it into a lightsaber.
Android
A phone operating system that is developed by Google, and considered a big competitor of the iPhone.
Your best choice if you: Are a big fan of Google, and use a lot of its services like Gmail, Picasa (for photo sharing), or Google Calendar.
What we like about it:
Android-operated phones often have an actual keyboard (not just a virtual one), which makes typing a bit easier;
There are several phone models available that run the Android operating system, so you can be loyal to your favourite phone maker.
BlackBerry
Before the iPhone came about, BlackBerry was the obvious choice for sending emails on-the-go. BlackBerry remains a popular option for taking your business with you out of the office.
Your best choice if you: Really are looking for a business phone that is easy to type with (BlackBerry is known for an easy-to-use keyboard), and aren’t so interested in apps for entertainment purposes.
What we like about it:
BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), which allows BlackBerry users to chat for free (without paying SMS fees);
It’s made by a Canadian company (Research In Motion).
Microsoft’s effort to regain part of the smartphone market; Windows Phone 7 was just recently launched. A completely different system than Windows Mobile 6 (their previous offering); a totally new feel—it’s much more efficient, too.
Your best choice if you: Own an XBOX 360 and play online a lot, or if you’re a huge Windows fan.
What we like about it:
The design of the interface is particularly pleasing, and a nice change from the iPhone / Android-style home screen;
It has integrated gaming functions that are compatible with XBOX Live.
