Hot Drinks for the Cold Season

A seasonal sipping guide
When the winds begin to blow colder and the snow starts to fall, it’s time to think about entertaining indoors. While the drinks below are designed with seasonal events in mind, they are certainly good for a cozy night in by the fire, as well. For holiday gatherings, it’s a treat to have a pot simmering on the stove, filling the air with aromas of spice. Better yet, you can use a slow cooker to keep serving simple. These cocktails are great for family get-togethers and seasonal sports, whether it’s after a day of skiing… or a day of shopping and gift-wrapping!

Hot Apple Jerry
1 part Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
 2 parts apple cider
 2 - 3 slices of orange
 3 - 5 cinnamon sticks
 3 - 5 cloves
Combine ingredients in order above. Heat in slow cooker and serve. Garnish glasses with an apple wedge.

Hendrick’s Hot Gin Punch
3 teacups Hendrick’s Gin
3 c. Madeira wine
3 cloves
A pinch grated nutmeg
1 large tsp. cinnamon powder
6 large lemon twists
1 small slice orange
3 big pieces of pineapple
4 tbsp. of honey
Lemon juice
Dash of water
Combine all of the ingredients in a small pot and simmer for 30 minutes. Pour into a teapot and serve hot in teacups. Makes six to eight servings.

Wiser’s Spicy Hot Toddy
1 ½ oz. Wiser’s Spiced Canadian Whisky
1 tsp. sugar
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1 lemon wheel
Top with hot water
Add all ingredients to a specialty coffee mug. Makes one drink.

Mulled Wine
1 750mL bottle of dry, red wine
¼ c. orange juice
¼ c. sugar
3 - 4 cardamom pods
½ tsp. nutmeg
3- 4 cinnamon sticks
1 orange, cut into 6 slices
6 whole cloves
Mix wine, orange juice, nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon and sugar in a large saucepan. Pierce orange slice with a whole clove and add to mixture. Warm at low heat for 10 -15 minutes, or until just simmering, stirring occasionally, then shut off heat, cover and let stand for 45 minutes. Before serving, warm again at medium-low heat. Serve in glass mugs garnished with a cinnamon stick or an orange slice. Makes six servings.
Green & Black’s Milk and Rum Chocolate Toddy*
250mL milk
3 tsp. Green & Black’s Mint Chocolate bar, grated
6 milk chocolate squares, broken into small pieces
½ tsp. black molasses
1 oz. amber or dark rum
Small slice of orange without rind (optional)
Put the milk, grated mint chocolate, milk chocolate pieces and molasses in a small sauce pan and heat gently, stirring or whisking constantly to blend the ingredients. Remove from heat just before it comes to a boil and add the rum. Pour into your favorite mug and slip in a piece of orange if you fancy. Makes one serving.
