Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)

A deposit security which pays a predetermined rate of interest for a specified term.

Home equity loan

A loan sometimes referred to as a second mortgage that allows owners to borrow against the equity in their homes.

Inflation

The rise in price of goods and services which causes the purchasing power of a dollar to decline. In Canada, inflation is generally measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Initial Public Offering (IPO)

A companys first sale of stock to the public via a stock exchange such as the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX). Also known as 'going public'.

Insolvent

The inability to meet debt obligations.
