I recently got laid off from a Northern Tel Mobility dealer that was also part of a Kal Tire shop. So how it worked was that this shop was just a part of the larger chain so there was the boss for the Northern tel part (Mark) and a boss over him for the Kal Tire part (Ivan) and then a boss over him for the Ontario chain (Guy) etc etc. When I started working there Another girl had started there about 2 weeks before I did, she was hired first b/c she could speak French and I’m not fluent. So I had worked there for almost 6 months. I got laid off 2 weeks before my 6 month review. At my 3 months review I didn’t get a raise and the Ivan knew I would bring that up at this one. But a few weeks before I got laid off they cut my hours. Ivan told me they were cutting htem b/c that store was costing the chain too much money and he was supposed to lay me off but he knew I was planning on buying a house so he was gonna keep me on. I was confused to why my hours were being cut instead of the other girl tho b/c I had worked at Rogers for almost a year before I started there and the other girl had no experience in cell phones and even tho she had only been working there for 2 weeks more than me she was making 4$/hour more than I was so cutting her hours would have saved them A LOT of money. (just as a side note Ivan also golfs with this girl’s dad and her dad owns a printing company in town and is fairly well known). So all along Mark, who was a horrible manager, was only teaching the other girl how to do things like receiving the stock and doing product returns and processing Dead On Arrival phones with the manufacturers. I had had tons of arguments about it and how it wasn’t fair that she was learning all this and I wasn’t. I even took it to Ivan. But b/c how Mark is, he’s an obese Italian guy in his early 30’s who still lives in his mommy’s basement and argues like he’s about 12 years old, Ivan just said well we’ll work on Mark. So I would do research on other cell company’s websites to see what they had and what we had that was comparable. But if Mark saw me doing that he would tell me that I was wasting time and should be studying the plans But the way I saw it was that a lot of customers don’t realize which provider the phones they see on commercials are available thru and if they come in asking for one we don’t have we should know what that phone is and what it does so we can tell them what we have that’s comparable and what ways its superior to the other one. I got pregnant in December and the other girl and I would whisper about it but I never told anyone and one day I was in the back taking my jacket off and Ivan comes back and says “I know your pregnant you can stop hiding it” and left before I could respond, and I hadn’t been hiding it at all I just hadn’t chose to tell him yet b/c I hadn’t even told my family about it yet. Mark also saw me on howstuffworks.com looking up info on batteries b/c he kept telling customers to charge their phones over night but I had seen on the charger packaging that there was a timer built into them so it wont over charge them, so if theres a timer its not going to charge all nite anyway. And thru my research I found that you don’t have to, cell phones have Lithium Ion batteries that don’t have the same cells as Nickle batteries and don’t loose memory like Nickle either. I told him about it and he didn’t believe me and said he was too busy to read the article.
