Ah, the life of a soldier's girlfriend. Mike (my adorable significant other) leaves on Thursday morning for two and a half weeks of basic training in Saskatchewan. Once he's back in Alberta, he'll be on leave for another 2 1/2 weeks, spending time with family in Medicine Hat. Unfortunately, I will not be going with him as I just can't take time off from work. Once he returns from leave he's in Suffield from April 14-June 3. While I might be seeing him the odd day or two between locations, we'll essentially be apart for over 3 months. I am very mindful of women who "lose" their significant others for up to a year at a stretch while they serve overseas (or the women who leave to serve overseas). I am also thankful that Mike is staying in Canada. It can be hard sometimes, though. There are some days when I've had a particularly rough day at work and I'd like nothing more to just lie down on the bed and spill everything to Mike or to talk over a great meal.
At the same time, three months gives me a lot of time to grow and to reflect on my life, indulging myself in the things that are important to me. I'll have more time to catch up with girlfriends. I can start looking into some classes I'd love to take (or even ones we could take together when he comes home). I am a very busy and active person and it's times like these that make me thankful for my busy life...I don't feel as though I am sitting at home "waiting" for him. :-) |
