Farming - A lost way of life. by elahet0001

I was reading the editorial in our local newspaper the other day and the second paragraph was: "This year, apple producers are being paid to take apple trees out of production. There is, apparently, too much product available from other countries to make growing apples for a domestic market profitable."
Part of the problem is that there is a consumer demand for "no season" produce -- strawberries year-round, corn on the cob in February, etc. This opened the door for corporations to buy out farmers and run them like industries. They experiment with our food, things like hydraponic grown tomatoes - what happend to good ol' vine ripened warmed by the sun (not a light bulb) tomatoes?
I am so incredibly pleased to read that some of my idivine friends are growing and freezing their fruits and vegetables. You want strawberries in January? Open your freezer! Do not buy them imported from some other country - please!
Buy local (from within your own province) or Canadian grown food. Support our farmers, support our economy, support healthy natural food choices. If I want my food experimented on I'll do it in the kitchen thank you very much! |

my boyfriend's parents are dairy farmers, and most of his uncles are into farming as well. With more and more rules and regulations coming out about what they can and can't do (they can't implement certain changes because the electrical companies won't allow it, or they can't do something else because another company is afraid of the competition, etc.) I thought we were a free country who recognized and ENCOURAGED competition for the good of the people!? Whatever happened to that?
My parents have a vegetable garden, and they buy apples from local orchards. We have a friend who grows pumpkins and gives us a few every year, so we prepare and freeze lots for use year-round. Lettuce grows in the front yard for salad, cucumbers and tomatoes in the back along with strawberries (unless the badger gets them first, the brat!) Right now I live in an apartment, but when I get a home, I want to start growing veggies as well as have my own fruit trees!
Great blog, Elaine!
p.s. as far as the apple farmers go... why can't people just buy the apples when they are in season, core and cut them for use all year?! When you need apples for a pie or crumble, just get out a bag of pre-cut apples from the freezer! but alas! people are in too much of a hurry and too busy these days to work now for benefits later when it comes to food. *sigh* | |
