It was Dave’s birthday on Monday—the not-so-big 3-1. I had bought him a PS3 80G and was going to take him out to dinner to celebrate his big day. I thought I was the coolest girlfriend ever for giving him such an awesome gift… Let’s just say, he put my gift to shame that evening.
He picked me up at the office after work, and since we weren’t feeling very hungry yet, we decided to kill some time at home. I asked him if he wanted a drink. I should have known something was up when he enthusiastically replied “Hell ya!”
I made us some Bloody Caesars. And this is what happened next:
Dave: Takes a sip of his drink and sighs “I love you!”
Me: “Wow, is the Caesar that good?”
Dave: “No… well, yes, but that’s not the only reason. I love you. You got me a PS3, you’re so great, you’re the best, you’re so (insert more compliments that I don’t recall at the moment).”
Me: “Oh baby, I love you, too!” *kiss*.
Dave: “…you’re the best thing that ever happened to me… (insert more compliments)”
Me: “Me too, baby!” In my head, I’m thinking: I guess this birthday is hitting him harder than I thought, he’s getting so sentimental.
Dave: “…there’s only one thing that can make my life more perfect...” his hand starts reaching into his jean pocket; struggles for a while.
Me: “NO FUCKING WAY!” In my head: it’s probably something stupid like a pack of gum or something. He’s pulling my leg.
Dave: pulls out a little navy blue box.
Me: “You’ve got to be kidding! What the hell are you doing?” In my head: watch it be a pair of earrings.
Dave: Opens the box to reveal the most gorgeous solitaire ring I have ever seen. Cushion cut on a white gold band.
Me: Cue the tears. My knees give out almost immediately. I fall to the kitchen floor.
Dave: joins me on the floor and asks “Will you marry me?”
Me: Half laughing, half crying (craughing?) “Are you crazy? I can’t believe you’re doing this on your birthday.”
Dave: “You haven’t answered the question.”
Me: “OF COURSE I’LL MARRY YOU!” We cry together for a bit, then… “Can you please put the ring on me now?”
Me + Dave: “Craughing” together.
To make a long story short, we spent the better portion of that evening calling family and friends to tell them the news. Then we had an amazing steak dinner at La Queue de Cheval to celebrate.
Who would have thought that, on his birthday, Dave would have given me the greatest gift ever?
Now we get to plan a wedding! Weeeeeeeeeeee. |
